What We’re Listening To: The National

Let me start off by saying that I really wasn’t that into The National. I had liked a couple of their songs over the years but I never put any effort into listening to any of their albums. Then they dropped a bomb on me and released the “Trouble Will Find Me” album in 2013. Since then I’ve become a big fan of their music and really love their unique sound. Lead singer Matt Berninger is up there with some of my favorite vocalists of all time. Great fun fact about him, in 1991 he attended the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP College of Graphic Design program along with bandmate Scott Devendorf, so brownie points to them for being design nerds at one point.

So, I’ll have to admit this post is 2 years late, but the album is so good that I still listen to it to this day. I’m talking start to finish, like it’s the first time I’m listening to it. That’s when you know an artist has nailed it on an album, where every track seamlessly flows into the next and it keeps you hooked. It’s like reading a good book that you can’t put down.

Although the entire album is great I do have my favorite tracks: I Should Live in Salt, Sea of Love, I Need My Girl, This is The Last Time and Graceless. It was really hard for me to pair it down to that list but I did it. Now, if I were to pick my favorite song on the whole album it would definitely be Sea of Love. Can’t say that I like the video that much but little man playing “air guitar” is crushing it.
